Has fear kept you from getting the dental care you know you need? If so, you’re not alone. Fear of the dentist causes many patients to put off the exams and treatments they need to improve oral health. If visiting the dentist’s office makes you cringe, you may be a good candidate for sedation dentistry. Dr. Heather Fleschler is pleased to offer two forms of sedation dentistry to her Bellaire patients.
In sedation dentistry, Dr. Fleschler administers a medication to relax and calm you before beginning work on your teeth and gums. By calming your nerves, Dr. Fleschler can complete the necessary procedures more efficiently, and you remain comfortable the whole time.
Dr. Fleschler offers oral conscious sedation and nitrous oxide sedation to her patients. In oral conscious sedation, you take an oral medication that makes you relaxed and calm. You’ll take one medication the night before your procedure and one about an hour before. You’ll remain drowsy until the medication wears off, so you’ll need to ask a friend or family member to drive you home from the dentist’s office.
In nitrous oxide sedation, we administer what is commonly known as laughing gas to relax you. Nitrous oxide is a colorless, odorless gas that has a calming effect. This effect takes place almost immediately after starting to inhale the gas and disappears within minutes of your procedure being completed.
