Are you happy with the color of your teeth? There are many reasons your teeth might not be as bright as you would like. Your teeth might be stained from the inside, or they might contain surface stains caused by any number of factors. Regardless, our office is happy to provide you with a teeth whitening evaluation.
The most common causes of discolored teeth include:
- Smoking cigarettes, cigars or pipes, or using chewing tobacco.
- Drinking dark colored liquids on a regular basis – such as coffee, tea, red wine, or grape juice.
- Not brushing and flossing your teeth as often as you should.
- Age. As teeth become older, their enamel wears away causing discoloration.
- Trauma or injury.
Teeth whitening is a common procedure for most dentists. In many cases, it is most effective when the teeth have surface stains as opposed to intrinsic or internal stains.
Teeth whitening usually calls for more than one treatment. But even after the first treatment, you should see a certain level of immediate results. Before teeth whitening treatments can begin, you must make sure none of your teeth have cavities and that your gums have not receded. Additionally, you should be warned that whitening your teeth may cause them to become sensitive for a period of time.
