Sleep apnea is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening condition that affects roughly 12 million Americans. Left untreated, sleep apnea can cause headaches, high blood pressure, and even heart attacks. The FDA has recently approved a new implant device that has the potential to revolutionize sleep apnea treatment. River Oaks sleep apnea dentist Dr. Heather Fleschler is excited to tell you about this new technological breakthrough.
When you have sleep apnea, you are roused from deep sleep throughout the night when an obstructed airway prevents the brain from getting enough oxygen. Over time, the chronic lack of quality sleep and oxygen takes its toll and can lead to the development of serious health issues such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
The US Food and Drug Administration recently approved the Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation implant, and expect that it will be available in late 2014. The device is a small neurostimulator that is implanted in the chest. A lead that stimulates a key nerve in the neck is also part of the system, which produces a mild electrical shock. When the nerve is stimulated, airway passages are kept open and normal breathing is restored.
This surgical approach will be targeted toward patients who don’t respond to other treatments. Dr. Fleschler is pleased to offer a wide selection of sleep apnea treatments, including oral appliances and CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machines.
